FrogWatch for Families

What is FrogWatch

Have a passion for conservation? Want to contribute to ongoing scientific research? Join our local chapter of FrogWatch USA at Sunset Zoo. FrogWatch of the Flint Hills is a citizen-science initiative that empowers community members to learn about their local wetlands and aid in the critical process of identifying local frog and toad species. The data collected by local citizens is shared nationally and influences conservation work. After completing training, volunteers collect data during evenings from February through August.  FrogWatch is a great way for families to get involved in local conservation efforts and spend time together outdoors.

FrogWatch for Families is for preteens excited about conservation. The curriculum targets those 10-13 years of age. We have found that the curriculum is too advanced for our younger audiences. Please keep this in mind when registering. We do provide study materials that you can share with the whole family!

What to Expect in the Training Session

Participate in fun games and activities to learn about our native frogs, their calls, and where to find them. You will learn how to record data for the citizen science FrogWatch network. You can contribute to real science! Plan to be up and learning about frogs until about 11:00 PM. We will get up in the morning around 7:30, eat breakfast, pack-up and do one last activity before we let you go home around 9:30 AM. We will sleep outside near the pavilion. S’mores provided as a nighttime snack and a continental breakfast will be provided in the morning. (You will want to eat dinner before you come).
